Willow Glen Resident - April 12, 2006
Three former Yahoos put down family roots in Willow Glen; A new company just opened its doors in the heart of Willow Glen, but you won't see it on Lincoln Avenue. In fact, the only way to visit the business is to turn on your computer. The company, 3exY Inc., is named for three close friends and ex-Yahoo employees Samantha Fein, Tracy Jones and Sherry Willhoite. Their new product is www.FamilyRoutes.com, an online community service that enables family and friends to communicate easily, comfortably and privately. What Makes a Family?
The family you’re born into is the most obvious answer and for those of us raised with that family, that often becomes our defining principle of what family means. That has been how I’ve imagined family for as long as I can remember. It’s luck of the draw. Happenstance. I guess for me, it’s the brother that pinned you down and drooled over you until it was just about to hit you in the face and sucked it up at the last second (most of the time) and that same guy that called you in your darkest hour and told you how much he loved you and laid down the law about your path going forward just when you needed someone to do so. It’s the sister who socked you in the shoulder every single day between the time you were seven and twelve and then cried with elation when you told her you were having your first son. It’s your dad that gets crackly (that’s code for about to cry) when he talks about your daughter and how spectacular she is. It might be your mom who tries to stuff you full of snacks everytime you set foot in her home and insists on reading recipes outloud to you on the phone until you feel the molecular structure of your brain start to simmer. But. It’s your friend that you confess your most revealing epiphanies with, the friend that shows up sobbing and shaking on your doorstep knowing that you’re going to squeeze her until she stops shivering. It’s your friend from college that flits in and out of your life like an acrobat and always at the perfect time to say “Right ON!” or “Buck up, Tiger.” It’s the kid you’ve watched grow up along side your own that has the wherewithal to look you right in the eye and discuss their life with you as if you were two old men sipping coffee together at Mel’s diner. It’s that one friend you wished you had a chance to say goodbye to and the woman that sat you down at Thanksgiving and gave you the pep talk of your life. It’s the guy who takes in your ridiculous notions and gives the seal of approval with the very simple, “Go make your dreams come true.” and the people you lasso into that aforementioned dream. A few years ago I would have given the standard answer, “When a man and woman really love each other, they get married and when they have kids, they are a family.” I’ve grown up just the tiniest of bits since then, and now, I think your family can be found nearly anywhere. Some places may be more ill advised than others, but the chance presents itself more often that we are sometimes comfortable imagining. The opportunity is woven tightly with the risk of what it means to be family and what stark truths are wrapped in the abiding love that requires. A few weeks back, I mentioned my friend Sam’s new baby. It’s not the pink and cuddly kind, but it’s all about family just the same. www.familyroutes.com Do us a huge favor and bring us your family.

3ExY, ThrExY, SExY... on my :-L List --- My girls, I love 'em, but what's a man gotta do to get some props? They are workin' round the clock to launch a new product by February 15th. They have a whole network of people around them providing support, advice, hours, bringing them wine, etc... but, no one is bringing them love. So, what does the BBB do? He sneaks into their office and leaves love notes on the white boards, under keyboards, on sticky notes, in notebooks... he even colored hearts on the bottom of their water bottles. No love. No mention. So, anyhow, I'm kiddin.' No one need thank me for the love I give. GO GIRLZ! I LOVE YA'! Now, go see their site!

Brand new social network coming - called Family Routes. It looks coolio - one of my favorite subjects to speculate on. The traditional notion is that family heads are too busy to worry about social networking.

Sam the Marketing Genius -- I schlepped myself over to my friend Samantha’s house last night. Our houses are like bookends on the same street and over the course of the last couple years we’ve become close while we both navigated our way through our respective divorces and embarked on our “Take Two” lives. She’s hilarious. I don’t think I’ve ever left her house not just an itty bit exhausted from laughing myself silly in her presence. You CAN’T enter her home without her attempting to thrust a glass of wine in your hand. I do so adore her. Several months ago, with two partners, she began toiling on her new baby. It’s a social networky type website, but it’s organized very differently than the other offerings afoot and with some brilliant features. It keeps getting better every single time I see it. Every once in a while I get a holler to come help out with writing some of the Q and A to help build content on the profiles and I LOVE to do it for a couple reasons. 1. It’s a solidly established fact that I am a busybody and love to have a sneak peak at the goods. 2. I’m hugely proud of Sam and get a ginormous kick out of watching her work the magic. 3. It’s great fun for me because the writing is the kind of stuff I do just dorking around and the kind of thing I would do all day if I didn’t ….you know….HAVE BILLS. Anyway, the launch draws near. The big day is February 15th. In the meantime, you can bookmark the site and sit tight. (Intentional rhyme) www.3exy.com You’ll want to check it out. I’ll remind you when the time is nigh. They gave me a blog mention last night, www.3exy.com/routes and there is clearly some buzz on her site, cus I got some wacky traffic here today. Hey, I just realized you could read this…click the link….read there….click the link…..read here…..click the link…..read there….it’s a blonde joke. EUREKA! Sam, you ARE a marketing genius.
